Market Towns

Wellington

Wellington situated on Watling Street, the route used to link London to Virconium (Wroxeter) by the Romans, that later became a medieval market town granted its first charter in 1244. A settlement from as early as the 6th Century, the manor of Wellington was worth £18 at the time of the Doomsday Book. Today Wellington is still home to a thriving market whilst its locations in the shadows of the Wrekin make it a haven for walkers.

Wellington Market is the definitive Shropshire market. It opens four days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday).

Wellington is also home to Sunnycroft Villa a typical gentleman’s residence in Victorian England which has remained largely unaltered over time.

Much Wenlock

olympian trail

Much Wenlock is a medieval market town that lies on the way to Bridgnorth from Ironbridge. Much Wenlock was home to Dr William Penny-Brookes whose vision for a modern Olympic movement inspired Baron de Coubertain to re-launch the modern Olympic games that we know today.

Newport

newport

Newport is situated on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border and was itself planned as a new town during the reign of Henry I. A great fire in 1665 destroyed most of the medieval buildings which were replaced by a fine selection of Regency and Georgian frontages. Today a wide variety of restaurants, pubs and bars offer added benefit to this rural unspoilt market town.

While in Newport make sure to try the delicious handmade, award winning Wrekin White Cheese, prepared using traditional cheese making techniques.

Newport Market is held every Friday and Saturday.

Madeley

The origins of Madeley can be traced back to the A.D 727 when it was purchased by Mildburga of Wenlock Priory and is recorded in the Doomsday book with a value of 50 shillings. The High Street and Court Street are part of the World Heritage Site and there are currently 51 listed buildings in the area. Today Madeley is undergoing some exciting changes to complement its historic story.

Madeley Market is held every Tuesday and Saturday.
