Record number of pilots booked for model aircraft rally

The Large Model Association have announced that a record number of pilots are booked for the annual two-day event at Cosford next month. To date, 140 pilots are due to attend and fly models on the 18/19th July with all the activity taking place on the airfield.

New for the 2009 Show, will be a display of World War One models from a team known as ‘Dawn Patrol’. The team are hoping to display up to twenty models in a 1/3 scale, in formation at the same time.

Alex Medhurst, RAF Museum General Manager said:
“We look forward to the Large Model Aircraft Rally every year. Enthusiasts travel from throughout the UK to see the detailed models powered by miniature jet and petrol engines. The pilots control the models, some of which have wing spans of 20 feet, with precision and great skill and some models can take as long as five years to build.”

Other models booked to attend include Vulcan’s, an 18-foot B17 Flying Fortress and old favourites such as the Spitfire and Bleriot. Bringing in an international angle, a team from Germany will be travelling to Shropshire and displaying, amongst others, a half scale model of a De Havilland Beaver.

Admission prices to the Large Model Aircraft Rally including entrance to the Museum are just £9 for adults, £5 for children, £7 for senior citizens with a family ticket of 2 adults and up to 2 children retailing at £20.

Gates open at 8.30am, for further information visit www.rafmuseum.org/cosford.
