2012 Games

Enjoy fun and games in historic Much Wenlock.

Think the modern Olympics started in Greece? No, it all  began in Shropshire... and it’s still going strong!

The Wenlock Olympian Games, held annually in Shropshire since 1850, embraces everything from dressage, bowls and clay pigeon shooting to athletics, swimming and cricket. These Games are uniquely English.

They were the brainchild of local boy Dr William Penny Brookes, a founding father of the modern Olympic movement.  In recognition of this small town’s historic connection to the Games, one of the London 2012 mascots has been named Wenlock!
